Dentist Office Gives Free Screenings for Kids

Columbia, SC (WLTX) — Halloween was just this past Monday and no doubt many children have had access to lots of candy since then.

Unfortunately, some of those same kids may not have as easy access to to proper dental care.

“It is the time of year when obviously kids get a lot of treats and have an opportunity to get a lot of great sneaky stuff in their teeth,” according to lead dentist Dr. Terrence Vandiver of Small Smiles Dental Center.

During these tough economic times, proper dental care may not always be available or affordable to some families.

Dr. Vandiver said, “We just want to do our part to do outreach to the community, giving kids a chance to come in and get their teeth evaluated and let them know we are here and that we are concerned about the oral health of the children of the community.”

According to Dr. Vandiver, teeth are not the only thing that suffers when children don’t have the proper dental care.

“There are 51 million lost school hours each year because kids don’t have access to care and we want to do our part to put a dent in that number and let them know that we are here to serve, that we care and we want what is best for the children,” said Dr. Vandiver.

On Wednesday, Small Smiles Dental Center offered free, post-Halloween dental screenings for area children from low-income families.

“It does give us an opportunity to do something extra, everyday we are here to serve, everyday we provide quality dental care to the children of our community and this event is just another way of saying thank-you for allowing us to serve, thank-you for having us here for 9 years, thank-you for all that you do to allow us to help the children in the community,” said Dr. Vandiver.

According to Dr. Vandiver dental problems in young children can lead to lots of health related problems including, chronic pain, poor nuitrition and self-esteem issues from having a less-than-perfect smile.

Vicky Khawaja, acting as Tooth Fairy for First Family Dental in Aurora, hands out glow-in-the-dark tooth holders to kids who brought in some of their Halloween candy in exchange for a toothbrush and some cash. | Brian Powers~Sun-Times Media

AURORA — Those Snickers you bought last week will go a lot further than you expected this year, thanks to a charity program launched by First Family Dental in Aurora.

Candy buy-back means that not only will kids make a few bucks for the stash in their trick-or-treat bags, but that the traded candy will be distributed to kids in need — some as far away as Afghanistan.

“We will distribute some of the candy to local charities to distribute in moderation, and some will go to the troops who can distribute it in the area they are serving,” said Vicky Khawaja, First Dental marketing and sales representative.

Khawaja cameoed as the Tooth Fairy on Tuesday at the First Family Dental location on South Commons Drive in Aurora, where she collected candy and handed out more hygiene-friendly treats.

“We’re trying to create awareness in the community, especially with oral hygiene,” she said. “If kids start off learning good habits, they will stay with them their whole lives.”

Toothbrushes, Disney dental floss and a glow in the dark tooth holder — to ensure the Tooth Fairy can find it — were given to kids on their visit.

In the first hour, more than six pounds of candy were traded in for $1 a pound. The buy-back will last through Saturday and is happening at the clinics in 10 Chicagoland locations.

Khawaja was also handing out information about visiting the dentist to help alleviate stigma and fear. In an effort to keep kids aware of their sparkling smiles, Khawaja said the clinic goes into schools to teach about oral hygiene.

“I guess it’s our way of giving back,” she said. “Our business is growing because of the community.”

First Family Dental is at 55 S. Commons Drive on Aurora’s far East Side. Call 630-585-1155.

Dentists Buy Back Halloween Candy to Send to Troops

By now parents are probably looking for ways to get their kids to get off the Halloween candy sugar high.

How about selling the sweets to your dentist? A candy buyback program is underway with the treats then being ship overseas to U.S. troops.

Dentists call it a win-win-win. The kids get some money, we keep unwanted sugar out of their bodies and the troops receive a care package from home.

Sammie Estep and her brother Oscar turned over their Halloween candy. The young kids are taking part in a candy buy back program. Dentists all over the country are paying kids $1 per pound for sweets which are then sent to U.S. troops serving over seas.

“They were excited,” said Dr. Susan Estep.

Sammie and Oscars‘ mother, Dr. Susan Estep, works at Atlanta Dental Spa in Buckhead.

“They want the cash so they take out the few pieces of their favorite kind and the rest they keep loading into the bag,” said Dr. Estep.

Last year operation gratitude collected 125 tons of candy nationwide. The folks in one office brought in 120 pounds alone — an amount they want to surpass. So students from three local elementary schools are expected to come and sell their candy.

Dentists say the buy back pays off in healthy children.

“We want to get the sugar out of the kids’ bodies,” said Dr. Estep.

The program also serves as a great way to let the men and women serving our country know their dedication isn’t lost on those state-side.

“The troops feel taken care, they feel remembered, especially from kids because they know what that means the kids give up their candy that hits a sweet spot with everybody,” said Dr. Peter Boulden.

Oscar and big sister Sammie each turned in five pounds of candy and they knew right away what they wanted to do with their new found money.

“Buy a toy at the toy store,” said Sammie Estep.

Of course not everyone is participating in the candy buy back. You should call your local dentists to see if they’re taking part. If not, you can log on to operation gratitude’s website where you can search for one that is: http://www.halloweencandybuyback.com/index.html

Cosmetic Dentist in New York Discusses Latest White Smile Diet Trend

According to recent statistics from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), teeth whitening procedures have increased during the last five years by over 300%. The latest AACD member poll also reports that 77% of dentists predict that teeth whitening will be the top office procedure for 2011. Dr. Michael Kosdon, a cosmetic dentist in Manhattan, says that he has seen a similar increase in the procedure and suggests that the growth is likely a result of the increased awareness of bright smiles from celebrities and subsequent media emphasis. While professional procedures are still the most effective treatment, Dr. Kosdon recommends several dieting tips for naturally whitening teeth and improving dental health.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 02, 2011

At his New York City cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Michael Kosdon says teeth whitening has significantly grown in popularity in the last five years, an observation reflected by statistics from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) stating that procedures in teeth whitening have increased over 300% since 2006. A recent AACD member poll also reports that 77% of dentists in the association believe teeth whitening will be the top office procedure for 2011, overtaking dental bonding as the most popular. In addition to professional dental procedures, Dr. Kosdon recommends regular and thorough oral hygiene paired with a healthy diet to maintain a bright smile. While certain drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, and soda are known to stain teeth, Dr. Kosdon lists several foods that can help aid in the natural whitening of teeth.

Dr. Kosdon says that foods like apples, celery, and cauliflower work like nature’s toothbrush to scrub away plaque buildup because of their crunchy texture. He adds that they also stimulate saliva production, preventing stains from adhering to teeth. Oranges, pineapples, and strawberries, Dr. Kosdon says, contain acid that may help whiten the surface of teeth while killing bacteria and fighting against tooth decay and bad breath. He also recommends eating yogurt or cheese because they contain proteins that aid in the prevention of harmful, cavity-causing acids binding to teeth. These foods are also packed with vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, which can provide teeth with additional strength.

Whether patients are looking for cosmetic procedures such as porcelain veneers or simply routine checkups and general dentistry, Dr. Kosdon says that focusing on proper dental hygiene and oral health is the first and foremost concern. He adds that if patients desire additional cosmetic enhancement from professional teeth whitening procedures, seeking out a dental professional who is experienced and passionate about patient care can ensure the best results. “A sensible, well balanced diet can have an impact on your oral well-being in many ways. Eating healthy should be considered part of maintaining a beautiful smile, just like brushing and flossing.”

About Michael Kosdon, DDS

Dr. Michael Kosdon received his dental training at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and several other dental associations. He has dental practices in Los Angeles and New York City.

Study of Oral Health in Indian Reservation: 90 Percent Suffer Tooth Decay

Portland, Ore.– Forty percent of children and nearly 60 percent of adults on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota suffer from moderate to urgent dental needs, including infections and other problems that could be life-threatening, according to a study released today at the 68th annual National Congress of American Indians conference being held in Portland.

The study, the first in 12 years on the state of oral health at this remote reservation, paints a disturbing picture of unchecked decay, gum disease and other serious dental problems that can lead to lower performance in school, infections and even death.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation funded The Checkup Study, which showed that 90 percent of participants showed signs of active decay, a rate three times that typically found in the United States.

“Many of the Pine Ridge residents suffer daily from wrenching dental pain yet they face huge barriers to getting routine care,” said lead author Terry Batliner, DDS of the Colorado School of Public Health and a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

“A severe shortage of dentists willing to practice in isolated areas has left many Americans, including American Indians, with ongoing dental problems that threaten their overall health.”

The Indian Health Service, a federal agency that provides health and dental care for American Indians and Alaska Natives, conducted a limited survey of dental needs on this reservation back in 1999.

To offer a more comprehensive view of the oral health problems in Pine Ridge today, the Checkup team traveled to twenty communities on the reservation and recruited 292 adults and children for the study.

They gave each participant a dental exam, identified any decay or other problems and then offered recommendations for treatment. The Checkup study showed that residents at Pine Ridge had significantly higher numbers of decayed teeth and lower numbers of treated or filled teeth than reported by the 1999 Indian Health Service study.

The team discovered that 84 percent of children in the study and 97 percent of adults had ongoing decay, a problem that can lead to loss of permanent teeth.

Other key findings of the evaluation showed that:

  • Ninety two adults or 68 percent of the adult participants had evidence of gum disease and 16 percent showed signs of an advanced problem. Gum disease can lead to a loss of teeth and can put people at risk for other serious health problems like heart disease.
  • One child and five adults were found to have signs of a precancerous condition of the mouth. If left untreated, such a condition can progress to full-fledged cancer.
  • The high prevalence of decay and gum disease suggests that many participants had chronic pain that could interfere with daily activities.
  • About half the adults in the study had missing teeth and two had no teeth at all.

“All Americans, including those living in Pine Ridge, should have access to affordable dental care,” said Sterling K. Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

“It is time to expand the reach of dentists by employing a new type of dental practitioner to provide routine care. This approach has worked extremely well in Alaska, where dental therapists are effectively delivering dental care to people living in isolated villages. In fact, since the program got underway in 2005, dental therapists have been able to reach 35,000 people who didn’t have access to care before. ”

Close to 50 million Americans live in dental health shortage areas–places without enough dentists to meet the demand for routine oral health care. However, poverty and extreme conditions make the access problem much worse for residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Batliner said.

Just ten dentists working in three locations must provide care for 30,000 people living in an area roughly the size of Connecticut. As a result, many people must wait for months just to get an appointment and some children in the study had never seen a dentist before.

In winter, the weather can make it impossible for residents of remote locations to travel. Even in the summer, they must travel miles along rutted roads just to get to the nearest dental clinic. And even if they manage to get to the clinic, overbooked staff might tell them to come back another day, Batliner points out.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which has a long history of supporting efforts to improve access to oral health care for those who go without, is currently working with five states – Ohio, Kansas, New Mexico, Washington and Vermont — to consider dental therapists as part of an overall approach to expand care to vulnerable children and families.

More than a dozen other states are considering midlevel dental practitioners as a way to expand access, including California, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine and others. Alaska and Minnesota already allow dental therapists to practice.

Other approaches identified by the authors include allowing licensed hygienists to serve as dental therapists in federally designated shortage areas. The authors also said that the tribe could take federal dollars now used to provide dental care on the reservation and use the money to create their own oral health care system.
